England boss Gareth Southgate named a 25-man squad last week for the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 warm-up friendlies against Brazil and Belgium this month. Mainoo was omitted and was instead named in the England U21s squad – but a shock U-turn on Tuesday has seen the United teenager promoted to senior level for the first time – and he could now be set to earn his first cap for his country. There have not been any dropouts or injuries from the other 25 England stars, which means Mainoo’s call-up is somewhat unusual, given that a player usually only comes in after a squad announcement to replace someone else. The 18-year-old has massively impressed for the Red Devils this term after breaking into the first team under Erik ten Hag and some were left shocked that the young midfielder was not included in the senior England squad last week. Mainoo has now provided insight into how he found out about his promotion to senior level after being called to reception by assistant manager Steve Holland. ‘It’s a bit different!’ Mainoo said in a video posted on England’s official social media accounts when asked about jumping up from the U21s.
