With Major League Baseball opening the season on Wednesday in Seoul, South Korea, between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, the rest of the league has taken advantage of announcing their Opening Day starters early.In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, MLB shared a graphic of every starting pitcher given the honors of throwing their team’s first pitch of the season except for Tyler Glasnow of the Dodgers and Yu Darvish of the Padres.Here are five matchups to look forward to in the coming days.Dodgers vs. PadresMarch 20, 6:05 a.m. ETGlasnow is taking the mound for his favorite team for the first time and living out his boyhood dream. Los Angeles acquired Glasnow from Tampa Bay in a December trade and Wednesday marks his second-career Opening Day start.Darvish will take the ball in his fourth Opening Day start, and third with the Padres. He is coming off an injury-riddled 2023 and was shut down in August due to a stress reaction in his right elbow but has looked strong all spring.Angels at OriolesMarch 28, 3:05 p.m. ETPatrick Sandoval replaces Shohei Ohtani as Los Angeles’ Opening Day starter which is a tall order. If he earns a win against the Orioles to open 2024, Sandoval would be the first Angels left-hander to do so on Opening Day since Joe Saunders in 2009.Corbin Burnes was acquired in a blockbuster trade back in February. He will make his Baltimore debut while making his third-career Opening Day start. The 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner has earned votes in each of the last four years and has a 2.86 earned run average in that timeframe.Braves at PhilliesMarch 28, 3:05 p.m. ETSpencer Strider is Atlanta’s ace and after leading the league with 20 wins, 281 strikeouts, and 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings in 2023, it’s no surprise that he taking the mound first.Zack Wheeler has earned the start for Philadelphia which ends a six-year run by Aaron Nola. He’s fresh off a three-year contract extension worth $126 million which was signed on March 4 and has become one of baseball’s top starters since coming to the Phillies in 2020.White Sox at TigersMarch 28, 4:10 p.m. ETGarrett Crochet gets the call for Chicago since his former teammate Dylan Cease was traded to San Diego. Crochet will also be making his first career start, making him only the third pitcher in the last 80 years to make his first career start on Opening Day.Tarik Skubal turned in a strong second half last season after returning from flexor tendon surgery. He looked like an ace upon his return, posting a 2.80 ERA with a 7.29 K/BB ratio. This is the fifth straight year that the Tigers will start a lefty.Yankees at AstrosMarch 28, 4:10 p.m. ETWith Gerrit Cole sidelined, Nestor Cortes gets the nod for New York. This will mark the first time since 2019 that Cole hasn’t started Opening Day for the Yankees and Cortes missed a good chunk of last season due to injury.Framber Valdez is in a similar situation with Houston due to Justin Verlander starting the season on the injured list. However, this is his third consecutive Opening Day start for the Astros becoming the third pitcher to notch three straight Opening Day starts since 2015 joining Dallas Keuchel and Verlander.
