News NPR quits Twitter after ‘state-affiliated,’ ‘government-funded’ labels Evelyn Blackwell7 mins ago 3 minutes read NPR has officially decided to leave Twitter – about a week after the social media platform first designated its main account as “state-affiliated media,” leading to an outcry over how the label undermines the independent news outlet.
Twitter suddenly slapped NPR with the “state-affiliated media” label, the same designation often used to identify propaganda and media outlets controlled by authoritarian governments, on the night of April 4.
NPR CEO John Lansing called the move “unacceptable.” Twitter later revised the label to “government-funded media.” NPR has maintained that both labels are inaccurate – noting the nonprofit news company operates independently of the U.S. government.
Federal funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting accounts for less than 1% of NPR’s annual operating budget, the company said.
On Wednesday, NPR announced that it would no longer post new content on its 52 Twitter feeds – becoming the first news major organization to quit Twitter, NPR reported.
“NPR’s organizational accounts will no longer be active on Twitter because the platform is taking actions that undermine our credibility by falsely implying that we are not editorially independent,” NPR said in a statement sent to USA TODAY on Wednesday.
“We are turning away from Twitter but not from our audiences and communities.
There are plenty of ways to stay connected and keep up with NPR’s news, music, and cultural content,” the news outlet added.
‘Unacceptable’: NPR pushes back after Twitter labels it ‘state-affiliated media Tech:Google launches ‘experiment updates’ page for Bard, says chatbot math skills are improving In a final Twitter thread posted Wednesday morning, NPR shared other places readers and listeners can find its journalism.
Aside from Wednesday’s Twitter thread, NPR has not posted on its main Twitter account since April 4.
“I would never have our content go anywhere that would risk our credibility,” Lansing said in an interview with NPR on Wednesday.
NPR journalists, employees and member stations can decide on their own if they want to keep using the platform, company spokesperson Isabel Lara told The Associated Press.
‘Government-funded media’ label given to PBS, BBC In addition to NPR, Twitter had given the “government-funded media” label to several other outlets as of Wednesday, including PBS and the BBC.
PBS said on Wednesday it has also stopped tweeting from its main account because of its new label and has no plans to resume.
PBS hasn’t tweeted from its main account since Saturday (April 8).
“PBS’s editorial independence is central to our work, and will never change.
We produce trustworthy content that features unbiased reporting,” PBS’s Twitter bio now reads.
The BBC’s main Twitter account had a “publicly-funded media” tag as of Wednesday afternoon.
In an interview with a BBC reporter at Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters, Twitter owner Elon Musk acknowledged that the British organization was “not thrilled” about the initial “government-funded” label.
“Our goal was simply to be as truthful and accurate as possible,” Musk said.
“So I think we’re adjusting the label to be ‘publicly funded,’ which I think is perhaps not too objectionable.
We’re trying to be accurate.” Twitter hasn’t added the “government-funded” label for many other public broadcasting organizations, such as those in Canada and Australia.
It has also changed some labels without explanation.
Following Twitter designating NPR as “state-affiliated media” last week, Musk initially defended the label – sharing an image with some of Twitter’s guidelines for defining state-affiliated media and writing “seems accurate.” What’s everyone talking about?

Twitter guidelines used to specify that media outlets like NPR and BBC were not “state affiliated media” – writing that “state-financed media organizations with editorial independence, like the BBC in the UK or NPR in the United States, are not defined as state-affiliated media for the purposes of this policy.” NPR was removed from that sentence last week and, as of Wednesday, the rest of the sentence was deleted from the guidelines as well.
There is still one page on Twitter’s website that includes the old language identify both NPR and BBC and non-state-affiliated media.
USA TODAY reached out to Twitter for a statement on Wednesday.
The press account replied with a poop emoji.
